How to Prepare Your Garden for Winter: Compost, Mulch & Soil Care

Preparing your soil for the colder months is one of the most useful things you can do for your garden, estate or landscaping project. Across Dorset and Somerset, soils vary considerably, from heavier clay soils to lighter, free-draining ground, so adding high-quality organic compost, mulch or soil can help improve soil structure, moisture retention and growing conditions.

As a family-run business based in Dorset, we believe good gardening starts with honest, sustainable, well-made soil improvers. As gardeners and growers move towards peat-free alternatives, choosing a reliable growing medium matters more than ever.

In this guide, we take a look at what separates proper, high-grade compost from basic shredded green waste, how to spot quality, and how to protect and feed your garden through the winter months using 100% peat-free supplies.

The Chedington Difference: High-Heat Aerobic Composting

Not all composts are created equal. When it comes to your garden, what you put in determines what you get out. Most mass-produced composts are full of fillers, but we do things differently. Unlike mass-produced industrial alternatives, our compost undergoes a traditional high-heat aerobic composting process right here at North Buckham Farm.

Made from recycled organic green waste mixed with digestate, our compost is then blended with composted manure and mushroom compost. It is ideal for gardeners, landscapers and growers looking to improve their soil and give plants a strong start.

Natural Maturation: After high-temperature aerobic composting, the material is allowed to mature naturally over several weeks and months.

Zero Strong Odours: The composting process helps break down organic material and reduce unpleasant odours.

Balanced Salinity & pH: Batch-tested to ensure safe, nutrient-dense growing conditions.

Well-matured: Fresh, woody organic material can temporarily tie up available nitrogen as soil microorganisms break it down. Well-matured compost is much less likely to cause this problem and can add organic matter and nutrients to the soil.

Keeping It Local: Why West Country Sourcing Matters

The West Country is home to some of the finest countryside in the UK, and going peat-free is essential for protecting precious peatland ecosystems. But sourcing true eco-friendly compost goes beyond just reading the front of a bag.

For Chedington, peat-free is only part of the sustainability story. The business also focuses on keeping its compost miles low, sourcing materials locally where possible, including green waste, manure and wood chippings from nearby tree surgeons.

How to Spot Quality Compost

When picking out the best soil improver for your garden, look past fancy packaging and look for these four simple signs:

A. Consistent, well-structured texture

Quality compost should be reasonably well broken down, with a consistent texture appropriate to its intended use.

B. High-temperature composting

High-temperature aerobic composting helps break down organic material and reduce pathogens and viable weed seeds.

C. Batch Testing & Consistency

Our dedicated team tests our batches regularly for nutrient balance and consistency. Whether you buy a couple of buckets or a loose trailer load, you get the same reliable quality every time.

D. Balanced moisture management

Organic matter can help improve soil structure, moisture retention and drainage, although the effect depends on the soil type and the material being used.

Preparing Your Soil for Winter: Soil Care, Mulching & Frost Protection

Winter isn’t the time to forget the garden. It’s when you lay the foundations for next year. Heavy West Country rain and winter frosts can wash away topsoil nutrients and damage root systems if beds are left bare.

Step 1: Apply a Generous Organic Mulch (5-7cm)

Spread a 5-7cm layer of well-rotted compost or suitable organic mulch over bare soil and around established plants. Keep mulch away from direct contact with tree trunks and shrub stems.

  • Helps protect the soil surface from erosion and reduces the impact of heavy rainfall.
  • Suppresses weeds: A thick layer of mulch blocks light and can reduce weed germination and growth.
  • Feeds the Worms: Soil organisms naturally pull the organic matter down into the earth over winter, improving soil structure effortlessly.

Step 2: Protect Tender Roots & Young Trees

A layer of mulch can help protect plant roots from extremes of cold. Laying a thick mulch around delicate perennials, ornamental grasses, and newly planted UK-grown native trees acts like an insulating blanket for vulnerable root zones. Keep mulch clear of the base of tree trunks and woody stems.

Step 3: Top-dress veg patches and raised beds

Add a generous layer of well-rotted compost to your vegetable beds in autumn or late winter. Around 5-7.5cm is a useful general guide for top-dressing established beds, while deeper layers may be appropriate when creating or renovating a new no-dig bed.

Top tip: Apply mulch when the soil is moist but not frozen or waterlogged, and leave a gap around the stems and trunks of plants.

Step 4: Calculating How Much Compost to Order

Working out how much peat-free compost you need doesn’t have to involve complicated maths. Just drop us an email or give us a call! Our friendly team are more than happy to help, offering advice and bespoke options to best fit your needs.
